Meet The Plant Chica
The Plant Chica is a family-owned plant shop and community greenhouse founded by Sandra Mejia, a South Central Los Angeles native raised by Salvadoran immigrant parents. What began as a personal passion has grown into a thriving, community-centered business supported by family, friends, and neighbors. Sandra’s early connection to plants—passed down from her mother—shaped her vision of creating something meaningful and accessible. Today, The Plant Chica represents more than a brand; it is a reflection of heritage, resilience, and collective growth.

From Passion Project to Purpose-Driven Business
The Journey of Growth.. Literally!
The Plant Chica began in 2017 as a small side project while Sandra worked as a medical assistant, balancing long hours and motherhood. By 2018, the business had taken shape through plant sales on street corners and online platforms, eventually growing into a full-time venture. The demand for plants and community-driven spaces helped transform the idea into a brick-and-mortar shop by 2021. Since then, it has evolved into a recognized community hub with ongoing expansion and impact.
Plants For The People
The Plant Chica operates with a mission to make plant culture accessible, especially within underserved communities. Through affordable pricing, free plant giveaways, and open community programming, the business lowers barriers to entry for plant ownership and wellness
A Home in the Heart of Community
Originally rooted in South Central Los Angeles, The Plant Chica was intentionally built within the community it serves—an area often described as a “green desert” with limited access to plant spaces. Today, the business continues its mission from its greenhouse location in Leimert Park, a cultural hub known for creativity and connection. This space was designed not only as a retail destination, but as an open, welcoming environment for gathering and collaboration.
